I’ve heard it said that the martial arts journey is one without a destination; that is, the destination is the journey itself. As I have grown as a martial artist, and had the opportunity to train in many different styles, and learn from many different teachers, I have found myself wondering if this description is wholly accurate. Journeys will always have an end. It is simply a matter of what that ending entails. I view martial arts as not one journey, as is described by many, but a series of many journeys of discovery, not too unlike the explorer who moves from one adventure to the next, with each new adventure adding new color, new texture to the explorer themselves. With each new experience, the explorer becomes wiser, stronger, smarter, more ready to take on the next journey, the next chapter in the adventure.
I have had many journeys in the martial arts. Some have already ended, such as my tournament career. Some are ongoing, like my Brazilian Jiu Jitsu journey. Some are just getting started. Each journey is different, and each serves to make me a better martial artist, a better person, a better teacher, a businessperson, and so on. So what is the goal of it all? Where are we actually going? It turns out that our adventures, in martial arts and in life, have in my opinion the same goal: to teach us how to live fully, in the here and now, while making the best version of ourselves possible. Martial Arts is uniquely able to take the better parts of ourselves and enhance them, while also improving the not-so-good parts. Our adventures in the martial arts will inevitably end, but each one serves to help us reach the ultimate destination: Our best selves in any given moment. That is our true destination.
